Hello And Welcome

For over 50 years, SightSavers have been working to combat blindness in developing countries, restoring sight through specialist treatment and eye care. They have also been supporting people who have been irreversibly blinded by providing education, counselling and training for people living in poverty in some of the worlds poorest countries.

Last year they helped to treat over 23.3 millions people for potentially blinding conditions and helped to restore the sight of over 244,909 people. 5,038 primary eye-care workers were also trained last year as a result of the work of SightSavers.

For someone who is blind the gift of sight is the greatest gift of all. Sight is a basic human right and SightSavers believes that everyone - including those in the world’s poorest countries - should have access to the treatment and eye acre they need.

It costs just £72 per person for a training course enabling teachers to learn how to teach low vision pupils in an integrated classroom. The chance to learn alongside fully-sighted children is enabling in itself, reducing the sense of being cut-off that low vision imparts.

Eye examinations can bee cheaply and simply done. The operations that often prove to be necessary are often also quick and easy to perform. For example, an operation done in Cameroon recently is fairly typical:

Epie Sporah had a cataract in each eye and sight glaucoma. Her vision was poor at best. In preparation for her operation she was laid down on a bed in the “blocking room” where lidocaine and adrenaline were injected to deaden the affected areas. After this retrobullar block was applied to her eye which enabled her eye pressure to return to normal. Then, in the operating room itself, the cataracts were quickly and expertly removed. Literally in a matter of minutes she was in the recovery room. The change to her life was both dramatic and vital.

The cost of all this work, (crippling to those whose lives are lived in such poverty), to us is tiny. The benefits, to those whose sight is returned or improved, are immeasurable. With further funds SightSavers could do more to improve the situation throughout the developing world.

Champions Club Global Community are pleased to be supporting SightSavers International.

Please give whatever you can … be it the £72 to train a teacher, or just 16p even, the cost of a tube of ointment that can literally save a child’s eye sight!

Thank you!
